Josh Riesenberg pursues sport biomechanics to partake in sport-related injury prevention

Josh Riesenberg gained inspiration to pursue kinesiology and health, and specifically sport biomechanics, from his own past experiences. During high school, Josh suffered from a minor concussion during a football game which ended in him being benched for several weeks. Now, he hopes to play a part in future sport-related injury prevention.

“I have been playing sports and staying active all my life; I also enjoy helping make a positive difference in people’s lives. I have a huge interest in things like anatomy and motor control,” Josh said. “[High school involvement in sports] helped me discover my true passion for sports and biomechanics as well as my drive to help people.”

As someone who likes to stay active in his free time, Josh has made sure to occupy his time with plenty of activities and experiences both on and off of campus. Last year, Josh joined ExerCYse is Medicine on Campus, a student organization that promotes daily exercise. During his first year of membership, he worked on the newsletter that gets sent out to parents. Now he is the club’s treasurer, and has found a lot of enjoyment in the experience as a whole.

“Through this organization, I have developed a tremendous amount of leadership skills as well as outreach opportunities. These connections have allowed me to aid the community and stay active at the same time,” he said.

Off campus, Josh worked for several years at Lifetime Fitness in Urbandale, Iowa. There, he started as a lifeguard, and was later promoted to supervisor for the aquatics department. He gives credit to these roles for teaching him about teamwork and problem solving, both important skills to have when entering the workforce.

When it comes to his future, Josh is thankful for his academic career here at Iowa State University for providing him with the building blocks to advance into sports biomechanics.

“Every single one of my classes has provided me with incredibly useful information for my future, everything from exercise psychology to athletic training,” Josh said. “Each class has laid down the groundwork for each step that I take. I know that they will all prove to be beneficial in the long run.”
