Marcus England applies wrestling and sports background to dietetics studies
Marcus England, a senior in dietetics minoring in exercise science, has always appreciated the sports world. His time as a high school wrestler greatly influenced his choice in major.
“My experience in wrestling led me to become interested in [dietetics],” Marcus said. “While losing weight for wrestling season, I began to research what foods are best for recovery, for quick energy, or which have high nutrient content but low volume. It seemed very interesting to me, and I knew how important diet can be while training, so I wanted to continue to pursue it.”
Marcus aspires to help athletes with their nutrition plans as a sports nutritionist for the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
“I have a desire to stay connected to the sports world, and wrestling specifically, and I hope to be able to use my education to help the next generation of athletes,” he said.
Outside of his studies, Marcus makes sure to keep busy. He recently started volunteering as an assistant coach for a youth program in Ames. In this role, Marcus guides young athletes by utilizing his sports knowledge and experiences. He also ran a marathon in April, in which he directly applied information he has learned from studying dietetics and exercise to prepare himself for the event.
As he searches for internships and jobs, Marcus is excited to see what opportunities will arise for him after graduation. He credits Iowa State University’s dietetics program and professors for preparing him to advance in his career.
“The staff here do an excellent job of assisting you in any way that they can, and are very knowledgeable of the internship process for dietitians,” Marcus said.
Marcus advises prospective students to take advantage of the strong dietetics program at Iowa State.
“Reach out and find resources right away, whether that be peer mentors, your adviser, or other study resources. The content you learn in this program builds on itself and it is important to learn the information rather than just memorize it, because you will need to know it well moving forward,” Marcus said.
